Two-player Goa

February 4th, 2006

Vanessa and I tried Goa on Thursday night and we enjoyed it a lot. I have not been enthusiastic about trying out lighter eurogames with her recently, as I get bored of them so much quicker than her. Goa on the other hand, is a game with enough meat on it to keep me happy. More importantly, Vanessa also enjoyed the intricate thinking required, especially as Goa is non-confrontational.

Buoyed with this success, I am going to try some other big two-player games with her. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find non-confrontational, deep games without looking at multiplayer games. I asked Mikko about this and he gave me some nice suggestions, plus some of the usual suspects chimed in. Thanks! Caylus, Antiquity and Industrial Waste look most interesting.

    Hansa works well for two.

Thanks for the suggestion. Hansa does look like an interesting game, but I am really looking for something meatier, a real “system” game.

My wife and I used to play a lot of 2 player Goa. We also went through a Power Grid phase. It works surprisingly well for 2 player as well considering there is an auction element to it.

Powergrid! I have to try that.

We have similar requirements for 2-player games. San Juan is great as it has some depth but is quick to set up and play. 2-p Puerto Rico is also good but a bit more cumbersome. I like to play Lord of the Rings 2-player although Andrea is not so into it.

We tried Industrial Waste a few times but the game is really opaque to me; often it doesn’t feel like one path is any better than another.

Hi Snoweel. What happened to your blog? I enjoyed it while it was going.

San Juan is good two-player, no doubt about it, but I already play that quite a lot with another friend, so I’d rather play something different with Ness.

Thanks for the other tips. That’s an interesting comment about Industrial Waste. I am even more curious about it now…
