War of the Ring preorder

with 6 comments

It was my (33rd) birthday on the 12th and my wonderful sister preordered me the War of the Ring. I have heard too many glowing reports from Andy Daglish to resist. His play testing has even made him enough of a zealot to (rather harshly) flame Chris Farrell about it.

Unfortunately my copy is sitting in a warehouse until the official international release date. I hate this sort of nonsense. Do Nexus really think they will sell more games by using this approach?

  3. I’ve suddenly become aware of this impending game, and I have to say it looks amazing. As Igor from Dork Tower would say “IT MUST BE MINE!”

  4. Yes. A light wargame seems like it should fit the Lord of the Rings better than any other type. The cooperative game felt like a failed experiment, and while I enjoyed the Fellowship of the Ring card game, it did not try to capture the drama of the books. I was relieved by the quality of the recent films and if this is close to being as good, I will love it.

  5. I wouldn’t say flamed, more sort of ranted incoherently :)

I still hold out some optimism for the War of the Ring game, so I’ll check back and see if you liked it once you’ve played it. There is stuff that makes me nervous (not least how incredibly defensive some of the playtesters seem to get whenever anyone questions the design, and the long, meandering, unfocussed rulebook – now online on FFG’s site), but there is rather good stuff in there too, so we’ll see how it balances. I hope to play it again soon after comes out … I have no idea when that will be :)

  6. I know what you mean. I have noticed that the Board Game Geek hype around new games can become overwhelming. I have a good feeling about this one though. I think I will enjoy it a lot, but I can see that more experienced, discerning wargamers might be unimpressed. Obviously, I’ll let you know what I think…
