DGG bargains

June 11th, 2004

The inimitable Andy Daglish at Discount German Games, has shown me his list of surplus games he is trying to shift. Should I buy any of these? I already have opinions on some.

  • A Game Of Thrones: Looks interesting, but I hated the first book.
  • Abenteuer Menscheit: Looks good, but I have to get through the Settler’s Book first.

Game of Thrones is neat stuff…I tried to read the first book; got two chapters in and gave up. The game is kind of like diplomacy—lots of chances for backstabbing, simultaneous orders, whatnot—with some chrome. Good stuff.

I also like Res Publica. But Pitchcar is the one you want, I think, assuming you have any patience for racing/dexterity games at all. Heck, I might get that just so I can have extra-big tracks…

Oh, me too! Me too! I’ve been reading Game of Thrones for quite some time now (about five months, perhaps) and my god it’s a heavy struggle! The game is actually much better, but still too long and heavy for my uses. I can’t stand the thought of explaining the rather complicated rules every time I’d play the game… shudder

PitchCar is nice, until you try Crokinole. I already sold my PitchCar set, because it’s crap compared to Croke.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who hated the book. I only read it because I checked The Internet Top 100 SF/Fantasy List (www.gurge.com/amd/top100), which I only read because of the The Internet Top 100 Games List. How circular is that? I didn’t like it because of all the gratuitous sex and violence. (I hope I don’t sound like a total nerd.) I prefer the innocent, noble fantasy of Tolkein.

I really will have to get Pitchcar at some point. Maybe I’ll wait until bonus time!

Game of Thrones is the best book I have read in the last few years. So many twists and so unpredictable. There were violent and sexual acts referred but I didn’t think they were really described in any detail. I think the game is definately a variation of Diplomacy with some ‘German’ mechanisms thrown in. Because of this, it’s ideally suited to postal/PBEM – have a look at http://www.agotonline.com/. If you don’t like Diplomacy or longer games stay clear.

There’s no accounting for taste. I just found that these references left a bad taste in my mouth, even though they weren’t explicit. I’m pretty squeamish – I couldn’t finish playing Half Life, because I was too scared.
